I AM Kevin Higgins

Below is a funny article featured in the Onion, sent to me by a friend. It reminds me of all of those days of bitching about gym class, even in college.

Motorcycle Class

I just finished taking a motorcycle class this weekend. It was fairly intensive and difficult for someone who has never ridden a bike before. Fortunately, I passed. The class consisted of about 8 hours of classroom time and about 10 hours of hands-on training on a range. At the end, we were tested using hands-on exercises as well as a written exam.

The class was offered at the Fox Valley Technical College. They provided all of the necessary equipment (I would recommend at least having your own helmet). The instructers were very good, though the class was somewhat exhausting. I thought it was a bargain for $161. In Wisconsin, you can either take a road test through the DMV or provide a waiver from a certified training class. I chose to take the course because I thought I would have a greater chance of passing.

If anyone else is considering taking a similar course, it may be beneficial to get your temps first so you can practice on the motorcycle before class. I passed with zero previous experience, but I think it would have been much easier if I had some practice beforehand. Then again, if I can pass, anyone can. ;)

Congratulations Tony & Wendy!

My brother Tony and Wanda’s sister Wendy graduated from University this week. Though the ceremonies were last weekend, they still had finals this week (strange, I know).

  • Tony graduated from UW-Green Bay with a BBA in Management.
  • Wendy graduated from UW-River Falls with a BS in Conservation.

We are very proud of them both. Congratulations!

Yard Work Continued

We’re still poking away at our yard. Wanda and I took our first class in the Home Owners Landscape Series at the Fox Valley Technical College. The class was on yard maintenance. We’ve since learned the proper way to prune trees and shrubs, and we’ve replaced a large bare spot of grass in our backyard. We tried Scott’s PatchMaster Sun & Shade Mix, which includes seed, fertilizer, and a biodegradable mulch made from recycled paper. A neat idea, you just lay down the mixture and water. It’s supposed to germinate in 7 days, however, we’ve so far had mixed results. I think we didn’t lay enough down, and it rained hard shortly after, washing much of it away. We might have to consider laying more this weekend.

Congratulations, Wanda!

My fiance Wanda Fiala graduated today, marking an exciting end of years of hardship. For those of you who don’t know us too well, we both graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in Management Information Systems.

Back to School!

Well, I’ve decided to give grad school another shot. I’ve recently enrolled for classes at UW-Stout for a M.S. in Management Technology (as if I didn’t learn my lesson the first time around). I got some sweet financial aid too. I start classes in January. Wish me luck!

The Value of a College Education

So I start my new job on Saturday making $7.50 an hour. It dawned on me that I was making $7.00 at a job 5 years ago before I went to college. Basically, I went to college and did all that work for a 50 cent raise. To make matters worse, that amount doesn’t even keep up with inflation if you assume a 3% decrease in the value of the dollar each year. So I am actually making less money than I was before going to college. Go team.

5 Year High School Reunion

This weekend we had our 5-year high school reunion for the Kaukauna High School class of 1997. It was fun to see what everyone has been doing since high school. Some have bloated, some look the same, but a good time was had by all.
