I rarely agree with Ann Coulter. She usually comes off as being completely unhinged. However, I think she hit the nail on the head (save for the liberal dig) with a recent article she wrote about the state of illegal immigration in the U.S.:
“It’s as if we’ve got the last Xbox 360s available on Christmas Eve and instead of doubling the price, we’re entertaining low-ball offers. Or more accurately, we’re paying our customers to take the darn things off our hands — and the customers are still indignant with us.”
It looks like our leadership has failed us again. “With the government facing imminent default because it has depleted its authority to borrow money, the debt limit bill would pump up the federal borrowing cap to $8.18 trillion. That is 70 percent the size of the entire U.S. economy, and more than $2.4 trillion higher than the debt Bush inherited upon taking office in 2001.” But I guess it’s easy to ignore the experts when you don’t have to worry about being re-elected. I love this line:
“Republicans said they were being responsible because the increased borrowing will let the government pay Social Security benefits and its other bills.”
Great, give money to those who were too stupid to save and give the bill to those of us who are already paying for two retirements. They also state they are going to use it to “pay other bills.” Doesn’t a loan payment count as a “bill”? At least Feingold and Kohl voted against it.
On a lighter note, I saw this humorous cartoon by Ted Rall.
At least my taxes will be lower so I can pay for the heat bill… And I’ll sleep better knowing the evil homosexuals aren’t coming to get me.
So far, I don’t think the Republican National Convention has gotten off on the right foot. The first day was quite disappointing. I thought it was particularly offensive to have Muslim chaplain talk about tolerance in the same city that was hit three years earlier. Even more strange is the fact that I would imagine a great majority of Republican constituents are likely Christians, so quotations from the Koran probably didn’t sit well. It seemed a little too preechy, like “Yeah, you were bombed, but get over it and embrace us.” As I’ve always said, freedom from religion is just as important as freedom of religion. The other speakers were meaningless to me. Your thoughts?
Update: I watched last nights RNC. Although I thought the President’s daughters were lame and disrespectful, I think Schwarzenegger and Laura Bush had strong speeches. I’ve also come to realize the key difference between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats think we started the war by invading Iraq (funny how they never mention Afghanistan), Republicans think the enemy started the war and we are just defending ourselves. I tend to agree with the Republicans on that one.
