Wanda and I went to The Henry Ford museum this weekend. Among many very excellent exhibits was one of the African-American civil rights struggle in the United States. We even got to step into the actual bus Rosa Parks took her historic stand in. There was a lot of history at the exhibit, and I enjoyed reading about the details. I found myself comparing the struggle of black people to that of modern-day GLBTs. Please note that I am not suggesting that the injustices that African-Americans suffered are equal to those of GLBTs today. There is no establishment de jure of capital punishment for same sex couples, and the idea of public lynchings of GLBTs is absurd.
However, while exploring the history, I couldn’t help but apply modern mores in a similar light. For example, I believe that most individuals would find the Dred Scott verdict to be absurd today. How many of those same individuals are in favor of modifying the state constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman?
While pondering, I pictured many of those conservatives who call into my talk radio programs and suggest things such as, “I don’t care what they do in private, but they shouldn’t be allowed to marry!”
I guess history does repeat itself sometimes.
My cousin, Travis Jansen, married Cindy Hillmann this weekend in the metropolis that is Fort Atkinson, WI. They couldn’t have picked a better spot to honeymoon – Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Have fun and be sure to take lots of pictures – we’ll be expecting them when you get back!
Well, we did it. Wanda and I got married on the 4th of July of this year. We just got back from spending a week in Jamaica where we got married at the Beaches Boscobel resort. It was a lot of fun, although the weather was very hot and the Jamaican people have no sense of punctuality. How ironic it is that on the eve of our country’s independence I gave up mine. Pictures will be coming soon after I get them organized and posted.
Update: Our wedding pictures are finally online!
For those of you who don’t know, Wanda and I are getting married the 4th of July of this year at Beaches Boscobel in Jamaica. We are really excited! On a related note, we had Kevin’s bachelor party last night. A good time was had by all – especially Kevin. One more week until his wedding!
For those of you who don’t know yet, I asked Wanda to marry me last weekend, and she said yes. (Whew!) We haven’t set a specific date, but it will probably be sometime in the middle of next year.
