It’s becoming increasingly difficult to rent movies on the south-side of Appleton. The east-side Blockbuster, where we used to do the majority of our renting, closed several months ago. I liked Blockbuster because you could return online rented movies there, and you could rent them for more than one day (unlike Family Video). When Blockbuster closed, we started getting our movies from Hollywood video. Sadly, I saw a sign on the door of the Hollywood video near us that they were closing their doors this weekend.
So now the only video store that is near us is Family Video. They have a decent selection, but I hate that the rentals are usually for a day or two (because I often rent a few at a time). Even worse, there will only one video rental store on this side of town now. I’m guessing the chances of getting anything Thursday through Monday will now be slim.
I’ve thought about a recurring Netflix or Blockbuster subscription, however, I hate to add yet another recurring fee to my monthly bills. It’s probably innevitable though – online rentals seems to be the way things are going.
Recently I purchased a sweet utility called DVD X Copy XPRESS, which allows you to make perfect backup copies of your DVD collection. It is by far the easiest solution out there for backing up your discs (put in the DVD, a blank DVD-R, and click ‘Start’). Works great! $49.99 AR on their web site.
I just got myself a new external HP 200e DVD-RW drive with USB 2.0 and Firewire support. It rocks. I got it for about $30 after a $350 mail-in rebate I received from hpinfolab.com for being an employee of Best Buy. Sweet.
